The order of the Minister of Agriculture for the recognition of the variety is under number RD 12-5/08.03.2022

On 16 February 2022 we officially received a certificate with number 4907/921.2019 for the recognition of the Bulgarian Spirit chilli pepper variety

The Bulgarian Spirit variety is registered in the EU common catalogue of vegetable species and can be freely traded.

The Bulgarian Spirit variety was created and cultivated in Bulgaria and grows beautifully at our latitudes.

Bulgarian Spirit is a plant with a bizarre shape – the structure of the plant resembles our typical Bulgarian chilli peppers, which are rather bush-like, but the peppers themselves have an exotic shape and look like a glossy strawberry. It is marked by a strong pungency and citrus aroma that leave a long and lingering aftertaste.

Hristo Rodinov

HOW IT ALL STARTED:

Hristo grew up farmer’s son and grandson. He learned from his grandfather that land is the greatest treasure, and in order to receive, you have to give. And today, Hristo often says that Hard work is the foundation of everything.

FAMILY:

Dedicating his youth to sailing and traveling the world, Hristo decided that he would follow into the footsteps of his family and take up farming, and along with that, start and build his own family. His focus has always been on two aspects – work and family. He has devoted his life to learning how to incite growth. If you ask him a question, he will often compare work to family and reveal how much they have in common.

LOVE FOR SPICY:

In 2011, he discovered the world of hot peppers and fell in love with them. It is not so much love for the hot flavour, but rather the desire to challenge himself and see if he can grow the world’s hottest peppers in Bulgaria, where there are 4 seasons.

HOT FLAVOURS AND BULGARIA:

Studying the botany of these plants and everything related to them, he began his experiments. It all shows that these exotic chillies will thrive in Bulgaria when you learn to adapt to them and what they need. He often recalls his grandfather's advice and the things he learned from him. One thing was entrenched in his mind and it was what drove the creation of the Bulgarian spirit: "Never sow a sweet pepper alongside a hot one"

Creating a hot pepper

Hristo was never a fan of super spicy, but definitely above average for Bulgaria. When we asked him what drove him to create a new variety, he answered like this:

"In Bulgaria people like to eat spicy food. And a lot of it. Sadly though, the hot culture here is quite foreign and we don't know our level of tolerance. I wanted to create a variety as a challenge to myself and all those Bulgarians whose available hot peppers are not remotely hot enough for them. I wanted to create a pepper that was extremely hot but also much more productive than the hottest pepper in the world. I wanted to combine everything I know and can do into one variety that would be a worthy representation of our country as a hot destination where we are developing the hot culture and moving forward. And so I started cross-breeding different varieties. I wanted to create one variety out of several different ones – timeless, different, high yielding and very hot, and make it so that, over the years, this variety stabilized.

It took about 6 years, during which I had set about 10 plants, of which only the Bulgarian Spirit stabilized over the years and proved to be the most sustainable for our region. Once I was confident that the variety was stabilized, we sent it to be tested by the EXECUTIVE SEED TESTING,
CROP APPROBATION AND SEED CONTROL AGENCY at the Ministry of Agriculture
, and we submitted about 2,000–3,000 pcs of seed to their seed bank and they studied the variety for 2 years, checking the name, the family, the parents, how it behaves, diseases, pathogens, how it thrives and other parameters according to which it was studied. On 16.02.2022 we officially received the certificate with number 4907/921.2019 for the recognition of the variety and that was the happiest day for me. I believe that creating is the main driving force in life. "
