"A family grows the hottest pepper in Bulgaria, near Varna.
And we're not talking about something merely piquant – it's 25 times stronger than the reigning champion.
Hundreds of fiery little peppers thrive on the family farm, and their qualities have been recognised even by visitors from Mexico.
And the story of the hot farm began almost as a joke. Hristo Rodinov looks after more than 300 varieties of hot peppers. They are spread across the family's farms. The plantings themselves came about after a chance conversation.
"At a completely chance meeting with some friends, we got talking about hot peppers. An acquaintance of mine had been to Mexico and told us how even small children eat hot peppers there. The comment was that there are no hot peppers in Bulgaria. Naturally, I pushed back a bit. We argued… and I said to myself – there's no way Bulgaria has no hot peppers. A few days later, after digging around online, it really did turn out that hot peppers are one huge family – five families, in fact," says Itso."
